The Beautiful Science Behind Facial Cleansing Oils

Posted by on

It’s a given that any skin cleanser should remove makeup, surface oil, and unwanted skin pollutants. But a cleanser can do more. A better cleanser will add hydration and nutrients to your skin while at the same time removing impurities. It will be both kind and cleansing. At Sageborn, we believe your skin deserves that better cleanser, so we’re proud to announce the launch of our own Purifying Facial Cleansing Oil.

At Sageborn, we believe your skin deserves that better cleanser, so we’re proud to announce the launch of our own Purifying Facial Cleansing Oil.

We’ve researched the benefits of the oil cleansing method and carefully formulated an organic custom blend that purifies and hydrates your skin. Still, we understand the combination of the words “oil” and “skin” can be a little scary for some. The concept is seemingly counterintuitive to everything our moms taught us about skin care. However, you might be surprised to learn that cleansing oils are not a new fad at all. Before the widespread availability of soap, oil cleansing methods were used for centuries, all the way back to the Romans who took olive oil baths. While they didn’t understand the science behind oil cleansing at the time, they knew it worked. Today we have the benefit of research to teach us why the oil cleansing method is so effective. So here are a couple of smart-sounding scientific words that help explain the surprisingly simple principals behind oil cleansing: solvent and microbiome

Before the widespread availability of soap, oil cleansing methods were used for centuries, all the way back to the Romans who took olive oil baths.

Solvents are ingredients that dissolve similar substances. This ‘like dissolves like’ principle is key to the oil cleansing method's effectiveness. Facial cleansing oils act as a solvent, and when massaged into your skin, will lift and dissolve makeup, pollutants and body oils (called sebum), without stripping your skin’s microbiome. And what’s a microbiome? It’s the delicate balance of bacteria that naturally lives on your skin and is meant to stay there. Over-cleansing with harsh surfactants found in soaps may remove harmful bacteria, but it eliminates the good bacteria as well, throwing the microbiome of your skin out of balance and likely leading to more breakouts down the line. Oil cleansing keeps your microbiome in balance which, in turn, keeps acne at bay.

Oil cleansing keeps your microbiome in balance which, in turn, keeps acne at bay.

Adding good oils to your skin also helps counter the sebum your skin produces. The logic behind this is that when your skin is stripped of oil, its natural reaction is to produce more. So if you have oily skin and you’re terrified of adding more oil to it, track your skin during a two week trial of oil cleansing. By the end of that period, you should notice less natural oil production.

Not all oils are created equal. Cleansing oils should only be formulated with high-quality plant-based oils. Our Sageborn cleansing oil is a skin-quenching mix of organic sunflower oil, organic avocado oil, and organic rosehip oil. These oils are rich in antioxidants and fatty acids that help fight free radical damage and plump your skin.

If all of this science isn't enough to persuade you to give our Purifying Facial Cleansing Oil a try, here are two more. We’ve added organic sweet orange and lavender essential oils to our formula. In addition to the natural antimicrobial and antibacterial properties of these essential oils, they bring a calming scent to your cleansing routine as well. The act of washing your face doesn’t have to be a chore each morning and night. With our Purifying Facial Cleansing Oil, it can be a few bright minutes devoted to centering your mind and preparing your skin for a more radiant future.

Sageborn’s Oil Cleansing Tips:

  • Massage a small amount of Purifying Facial Cleansing Oil between your palms, then begin massaging it into your skin using small, upward movements for approximately 2-3 minutes.
  • Dampen a clean washcloth (we recommend our Sageborn Bamboo Facial Cleansing Cloth) in warm water and gently steam the face. These few minutes under a warm towel are a great way to give yourself a little break from a hectic day and will help open the pores, allowing the oil to loosen unwanted debris.
  • Using gentle motions, wipe the oil off with the washcloth. Repeat if needed.
  • Follow up with a moisturizing cream or facial oil if desired. (we recommend our Rejuvenating Facial Oil)
  • As with any new product, if you are sensitive to fragrance, test a small amount of the product before use.
    Moisturize
